8 Easy Ways to Increase Your Metabolism

  1. Jump-Start the Day

A sluggish metabolism may need a kick start so that it can  function the way that it should throughout the day.

Starting your day with a workout is optimal in getting your brain and muscles in to high gear. Moving your body in the morning can give you the extra energy that you need to carry you until bed time.

Don’t be afraid to try some different exercises to keep things interesting such as dance cardio workout or yoga.

  1. Eat Well

Some fad diets have been found to be negative to the body’s metabolism because of decrease in nutrients supplied to the body.

According to researchers at Virginia Tech, following an unhealthy diet for just 5 days can have negative effects to the metabolism.

However, further studies have shown that exercising and following a healthy diet full of whole grains, colorful and leafy green vegetables, and lean protein are supportive of the body’s metabolic rate.

Therefore, providing the metabolism the nutrients that it needs to flow properly.

  1. Begin with Water

As the body rests, the organs function as they should by rejuvenating and cleaning toxins from those organs.

Throughout history, studies have shown that drinking water helps to replenish the organs, increase the metabolic rate and aid in weight loss.  Other benefits are that it reduces hunger and helps the body work better.

So drink water upon waking up to help cleanse and replenish your temple.

  1. Drink Green Tea

It has been well documented that drinking green tea is a wonderful way to increase your metabolism. This tea contains polyphenols which are tea antioxidants that helps lower bad cholesterol, lower blood pressure and boost the immune system.

Furthermore, weight loss is often linked to drinking green tea because it naturally helps the body burn fat.

  1. Avoid Processed Foods

Eating processed foods are a sure way to decrease your metabolism.  Avoiding them all together is an easy way to help the metabolism operate at a desired level.

This includes your typical junk foods along with other foods that have lower nutritional value such as fried foods and foods that contain white flour.

Dr. Josh Axe, a doctor of natural medicine, suggests that your diet be full of vegetables, organic meats, berries and nuts and seeds and lots of herbs.

  1. Fiber

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition posted a study.   They found that participants who were asked to substitute whole grains for refined grains, over a 6-week period, had an increased metabolism of 92 calories per day.  These participants consumed more than 40 grams during daily during this study.

Metabolism is increased when consuming foods that are high in fiber because these foods are digested at a slower rate and require more calories to digest them.

So, you want to make sure that you are getting adequate servings of plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes.

  1. Spice Your Foods

Spices such as cinnamon and chili peppers have been found to increase the body’s metabolic rate because they contain an ingredient called capsaicin.

This is a substance found in spices that increases thermogenesis, or the process of heat production in organisms.

When this occurs, heat increases the body’s temperature, therefore elevating your metabolism.  Spices are also a zesty way to enjoy your favorite foods.

  1. Do Resistance Training

When lean body mass is increased and maintained, it allows the body to burn calories at a faster rate, according to science.  Light resistance training is a great way to give the body a jump-start.

Strengthening the muscles such as the quadriceps (thigh muscle) or the biceps (arm muscles), are a great way to increase metabolic rates.

There are several easy ways to increase muscle mass such as climbing stairs, adding free weights to enhance a leg workout, or adding other resistance training options such as water aerobics to your weekly workout regimen.
